V/Rare AL MAR SERE #3003. SERE FOLDING KNIFE AND MATCHING SHEATH.

Knife is in near perfect shape. Sheath does show some blemishes (see pictures). Please see below pictures for close up details before purchasing. V/Rare: Why do I say v/Rare? Straight from the mouth of Robert Valade (Al's Master engraver).

While a large order of knives were still in the hands of the Seki factory the factory sales rep tried to increase a promised manufacturing cost made directly to Al. They told Al that they could not honor the original price due to a large increase in their costs to apply the color to the blade logo. That was the end of the conversation!! Unfortunately for most of us who love these great knives; much of the Al Mar history is now gone for ever.

Both Al and Robert are now deceased with very little of what is a great history story written down and or even passed on by these truly great artists and men. A brief history about Al Mar. Mar left Gerber to form his own company: Al Mar Knives. The knives were manufactured in Seki City, Japan in a 1000-year-old sword making facility; mostly by G. Al Mar's relationship with them started in 1976/77 when he worked for Gerber and G. Sakai manufactured the "Silver Knight" folders. Sakai subcontracted some models that were made by Mitsuboshi, Tak Fujita, and Hattori. Al Mar died in 1992 from an aneurysm. The color guard provided for his memorial service was drawn from the reserve Special Forces company then stationed at the Portland Air National Guard base. Mar had supported the unit for some time and was an honorary member of the company. The Al Mar SERE knife was the first knife accepted for use by Special Forces Colonel Nick Rowe for the SERE Instructor School at Camp McCall, North Carolina. Needless to say, if you're a collector, this is one for the books.
