A beautifully designed and executed knife, this was the third version of the Randall A. A gorgeous and rare limited edition knife with a beautifully grained maple burl handle, and which fits the hand very comfortably. Includes knife, sheath, "Fine India" stone and original shop care instruction sheet and butcher paper outer wrapper. General and Historical Notes on the Randall Made Knives A.
We made the knife with a 4" blade, a 4-12" blade and a 5 blade. Most that we had made were with stag handles. We also produced a few with Maple Burl, Leather, and Desert Ironwood. In 2012, Randall made one hundred with a 4-12 blade of O-1 and a plain Ivorite handle. I really like the look of a finger grooved handle, and Randall does those so well.We have asked them to make a limited number [200] with a 4-1/2 O-1 blade at 56-57 Rc. With a finger grooved Ivorite handle. Ivorite is Randall's proprietary off-white phenolic handle material.
This AGRS version #3 knife with maple burl handle is #009 of... 100 issued in the late 1990's. The AG dealer special is the knife that has a blade design similar to the model 11 with a longer "swoop" (for lack of a better word) on the back side of the blade than you would see on "catalog" model 11's. They were made with various handle material, and blade lengths... The most recent were the ironwood handles with 5" and then 4 1/2" blade lengths. (Dale, Knifetalk Forums website posting). The AGRS has been released in three different blade lengths (4, 4.5, 5) and with a variety of handle materials. As of July, 2007, the 4 and 5 versions were no longer produced and only the 4.5 knife was available... Total production numbers (as per Jesse Egnew on KTF): 4 (910); 5 (324); 4.5 360+ as of 2018?
AGRS versions #1-8 were all numbered by A. Russell (not at the Randall shop); version #9 is not so etched. The number is etched on spine between thumb notches and swoop. As per RMK, AGR never requested that RMK. Etch the knives with the number. The knife is in excellent to near mint condition. I have not used, carried, sheathed or sharpened the knife. It has been displayed, and handled by me a few times. The blade looks great with a tiny spot (looks somewhat like a water spot) to the stamped side.Appears to have the original shop edge. The Maple burl handle looks gorgeous and feels great in the hand. Sheath looks to be in excellent condition with moderate storage wear including scuffs and scrapes and a couple of dark spots. Owned and displayed by an adult collector in a smoke free home.
