This is truly one of the most impressive knives you'll ever own and if doesn't already have your heart racing you quite possibly are already dead. It was made with a massive, legendarily famous Hudson Bay-style dag blade, hand-forged in Massachusetts by Russell in their legendary Green River Works on behalf ot the Museum of the Fur Trade in Nebraska.
They produced a very small lot of these for sale in the Museum's gift shop and later on its website and then never since. Just look at it--truly a thing of beauty and a work of the knife-maker's art.
Blade is double sided with a long center ridgeline and so beautifully ground it could serve as a master class in how to shape a blade. As you can see in the photos, this knife has been expertly crafted and made to win every argument. It was produced by expertly hafting its stiff and sturdy dag blade with the royal treatment in the way of a new handle, a single chunk of the finest stag. The tang, which is cross-shaped, extends about 2/3 of the way down into the stag, where it was expoxied into place and then expertly lashed with rawhide thong. The base of the stag, at its crown, is etched with a stag's head, as you can see in the photos below.
Perfecting the knife is the PERFECT sheath, which was custom crafted for it and is of equal quality to the knife itself. Historically correct in style, it's what a serious fur trapper would've worn at this side and bet his life on every day, circa late 1700's/early 1800's. Still, it's solid enough today to be used in the field for the serious hunter, a GREAT piece for self-defense and WOE be unto anyone coming upon the wrong end of it in a fight. For the serious hunter it's a GREAT all-purpose knife, hefty enough for quartering game for carry-out like a smatchet, clearing brush, making a blind--you name it. It's not for the faint of heart or the particularly small of hand, measuring 15-7/8" long with a 9-5/8" blade, weighing in at 19.3 ounces, not including the sheath. Balance and feel are near perfect. This is quite a combo and very tough to beat at the price. An excellent, heirloom-quality find for user and collector alike, or the quintessential knife for any serious re-enactor of living history.
