DOUBLE EDGE FIGHTING BOWIE KNIFE. This is not a small bowie like those of the 1880 to 1900 time period. It is of the Civil War time,, having length and girth. IT IS DEFINITELY A FIGHTING KNIFE, TWO EDGED, I do not wish to say dagger as the daggers in this time period were much smaller, less hefty, with shorter blades. Blade Length (tip to guard).... IN A MOST REMARKABLE VIRTUALLY UNUSED CONDITION. 8 INCH LONG BLADE RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL MIRROR FINISH. Pictured and offered for sale is a Civil War Officers Double Edge Fighting knife in a most remarkable condition appearing as unused.

Made by and stamped on both sides of the blade, Side one F. SHEFFIELD" and side two "B4 ANY. Research revealed that he along with other Sheffield Cutlers were sending to the USA knives made for soldier use, Bowie knives, Fighting Knives, as well as folding cutlery.

Both sides of blade are very sharp. Original B4 ANY black leather sheath, or scabbard included.

THIS KNIFE IS INUSED, BEING 170 YEARS OLD, HAVING ITS ORIGINAL SHARP DOUBLE EDGE GRIND. THE BLADE WAS NEVER BUFFED. DURING THE LAST 45 YEARS, THE BLADE HAS RECEIVED PERIODIC SIMICHROME HAND POLISHING, FOLLOWED BY A APPLICATION OF MUSEUM CRYSTALLINE WAX. Historical Museum Preservation Societies urge for antique carbon steel preservation to (1) either by atmospheric and humidity control, or (2) periodic wiping away of carbon surfactants, following application of a crystalline wax coating on carbon steel to prevent as much as possible the natural aging of carbon steel. Generally speaking antique carbon steel will develop these carbon accumulations which left alone will eventually damage the surface, pitting the steel LEATHER ON SCABBARD HAS RECEIVED PERIODIC LEATHER CONDITIONING.

Pictures 10 and 11 show how the blade reflect the Camera image as a mirror. Leather scabbard, centered on silver throat collar is a missing belt post for belt attachment.

Stag handle , on one side has a small tight pin crack, caused by expansion / contraction, not damage, (view last picture 1/2 inch from guard).
